Miley Cyrus tumbled offstage Sunday night and broke her neck while performing at the Nashville Grand Ole Opry. She died immediately.
The 17- year- old pop sensation was performing a tribute to her fathers hit song “Achy Breaky Heart,” which first hit radio airwaves 20 years ago this month, when she found herself line dancing a little too close to the edge of the stage. During the chorus Cyrus spun left on the toe of her boot, and instead of catching herself with the heel, she ran out of stage and toppled over the edge, shocking the 35,000 attendees.
Kelly Pickler opened for Miley that night, and when asked about her death Kelly said,” It is so shocking and hard for me to even process this tragedy. Right before the show we did our usual prayer and she was so happy. It’s truly terrible that a girl with such promise had to be taken so soon.” Miley’s family has released a statement that a public memorial will be held this Friday at Disneyland in Anaheim. Ticket distribution details are still being worked out and will be released within the week.
Miley was born on November, 23, in Franklin, Tennessee. The daughter of country artist Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, Miley grew up in the limelight. Originally named Destiny Hope, her family soon took to calling her Smiley due to the ever-present grin that graced the child’s face. This nickname was soon shortened to Miley, a moniker that stuck and became the stage name that first graced Hollywood’s stage with a guest spot on her dad’s family drama “Doc”.
At the age of 13 she landed her first major TV role as The Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana. The show was a huge hit, with four seasons, numerous albums a 3-D concert movie and the most recent Hannah Montana The Movie. In 2008 Cyrus took a break from Hannah Montana and released her second album Breakout, which focused completely on Miley and her music. This album hit number one on the Billboard charts and stayed for one week. By 2009 Miley’s career had branched out beyond The Disney Channel. She starred in The Last Song, Bolt and Sex and The City 2. Cyrus also supported many charity causes and appeared in the recent “We Are The World: 25 For Haiti” and” Everybody Hurts”.
Her parents and five siblings, who will miss her smiling face and positive outlook, will survive Miley. “She was the best person I know, she was always so happy and she enjoyed life to it’s fullest.” Her older Sister Brandi said.
